Not being part of a community poses a substantial risk to your health. Studies have shown that social isolation impacts the immune system, and increases anxiety, depression, dementia, and sleep disorders. Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, PhD, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University, has found that social isolation presents as much of a health risk as smoking 15 cigarettes per day or alcohol abuse!

According to neuroscientist Alex Lieberman, we’ve evolved to be together. “Being socially connected is our brain’s lifelong passion. It’s been baked into our operating system for tens of millions of years. Mammals are more socially connected than reptiles, primates more than other mammals, and humans more than other primates," Lieberman said. "What this suggests is that becoming more socially connected is essential to our survival. In a sense, evolution has made bets at each step that the best way to make us more successful is to make us more social."
