Not being part of a community poses a substantial risk to your health. Studies have shown that social isolation impacts the immune system, and increases anxiety, depression, dementia, and sleep disorders. Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, PhD, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University, has found that social isolation presents as much of a health risk as smoking 15 cigarettes per day or alcohol abuse!

Ideas spark ideas and result in innovation, personal growth and community evolution. You were born to be adaptable and resilient to the challenges of life, but this requires creativity and an open mindset.

When you participate in your community by sharing your passions, skillsets, or simply your presence, you build the self awareness, confidence, and motivation to follow your dreams and make a positive impact within your community.

According to neuroscientist Alex Lieberman, we’ve evolved to be together. “Being socially connected is our brain’s lifelong passion. It’s been baked into our operating system for tens of millions of years. Mammals are more socially connected than reptiles, primates more than other mammals, and humans more than other primates," Lieberman said. "What this suggests is that becoming more socially connected is essential to our survival. In a sense, evolution has made bets at each step that the best way to make us more successful is to make us more social."

4 Simple Camping Desserts to Cook This Year

Bye-bye, s’mores! We’ve got desserts that are just as easy but way yummier! Impress your camping crew this year with one of these delish camping desserts. Because what better way to wrap up a day full of outdoors-y fun than with something sweet?

The ultimate in gooey sweetness, think of this as a cross between a banana split and a s’more. And somehow tastier than either of them!
Take a banana (peel still on) and cut a deep slit along the length of it. Don’t split it in half, stop your knife before you cut through the peel on the opposite side. 
Use your knife to gently pry the peel and banana open. 
Stuff it with your 2-3 favorite toppings. We’re digging: marshmallows, white or dark chocolate chips, sliced strawberries, chopped hazelnuts, crumbled graham crackers… you get the idea!
Wrap in aluminum foil and cook over your fire. You want to warm it up just enough so that the inside melts and it’s slightly soft.

This camping dessert is so easy, even kids can prepare it… and it’ll still be just as tasty!
In a large bowl, combine chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and diced fruit (strawberries and bananas both make tasty combos). 
Scoop the mixture into a waffle cone. 
Wrap in aluminum foil and cook over a very low fire for 5-7 minutes.

Delicious and nutritious, what could be better? And hardly any prep work, yay! No wonder it’s one of our favorite camping desserts!
Preheat your cast-iron skillet while you thinly slice a few apples. 
Add the apples to the skillet and let them cook until they get soft and start to release some liquid. 
Toss the apple slices with brown sugar and cinnamon, and add a shot of bourbon. 
Mix it all together over the heat to burn off the alcohol (but keep the flavor!). 
When it’s all done, sprinkle with granola and serve warm.  Pro Tip: If you have access to a cooler or fridge, bring vanilla ice cream or whipped cream to serve with your apple crisp.

Easy Apple Crisp

Does pound cake sound too ambitious for a camping dessert? With this recipe, it’s easy-peasy! 
Combine 16 oz. of your favorite berries with 2 tablespoons of sugar for about 15 minutes, until they start to release juices. 
Melt ¼ cup of butter (1 stick) in your skillet. 
While the butter’s melting, cut a 1-lb pound cake into 1-inch cubes. 
Add the pound cake to the skillet, turning often until all sides are toasted. 
Add berries over the top of the cake cubes. Top with 2 Rollos candy bars. 
Cover with foil and cook 5-10 minutes, until chocolate melts.

It’s never too soon to turn your kids in Road Warrios! Think rockin’ playlists and endless rounds of “I Spy,” plus some serious bonding time. But kids who aren’t quite used to sitting still are bound to get restless during a long drive.
To help you avoid the “Are we there yet?” chorus, we’ve gathered up our top tips for a successful road trip with kids.

Set your alarm and hit the road as early as you can. Because the sooner you head out, the sooner you can stop. Being done early means everyone (including the driver!) can spend the last few hours of the day wandering around a new city or relaxing at the campsite they found on <a href="https://thevanlifeapp.page.link/blogs" target="_blank">Sēkr</a>!

1. Leave Bright and Early

We know… you were planning on letting them use phones and tablets while you waited for your coffee to kick in. But once the kids have powered on their electronics, it’ll be a battle to turn them off. Instead, save the gaming and scrolling for when they get really bored, and try other distractions first. Which brings us to Hack #3...

2. Hold Off On Electronics

A quick trip to the dollar store (or through Amazon!) can yield hours of boredom-busting entertainment. Try small toys and coloring books for the little ones or word searches and arts-and-crafts supplies for the older ones. Keep their surprises under wraps and them out during “I’m bored” emergencies.

3. Surprise Them

A road trip with kids means lots of breaks: potty breaks, meal breaks, and “get the wiggles out” breaks. Look for roadside parks along the way — they’re usually the perfect spot for combining all three and minimizing the number of times you’ll have to stop.

4. Combine Your Breaks

When it comes to a road trip with kids, the stops can be almost as much as the destination! Give everyone time to stretch by exploring the cute downtowns and quirky roadside attractions you come across along the way. Adventures make the best memories!

5. Explore!

Pack extra snacks, even if you’ve already figured out where you’re stopping for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Because at some point, kids will get bored in the car… and boredom = hunger. Make sure you have plenty of (non-messy) snacks on hand.

One of the essentials for being safe on the road is being ready for what might happen. And when you’re traveling with kids, the usual emergency kit needs a few extras:

The holidays are a great time to get together with your family and friends and share a great meal together.  But many recipes can be complicated, have a number of special ingredients and take a long time to prepare and cook. <a href="https://bit.ly/3ES0MYb" target="_blank">MONTyBOCA</a> recipes are created to be straightforward for any level of cooking experience. All recipes are ready in 30 min or less and require 10 ingredients or less.

If you have a handful of Craisins, 2 small oranges and some granola you can make a fast, warm and delicious dessert in just a few minutes.  Top it with some vanilla greek yogurt and you’re set!

The core principles of <a href="https://lnt.org/" target="_blank">Leave No Trace</a> are fundamental to keeping the outdoors accessible. With these simple guidelines, <a href="https://lnt.org/" target="_blank">Leave No Trace</a> helps you explore the outdoors sustainably every time you get outside!

<ul>
<li>Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you’ll visit.</li>
<li>Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies.</li>
<li>Schedule your trip to avoid times of high use.</li>
<li>Visit in small groups when possible. Consider splitting larger groups into smaller groups.</li>
<li>Repackage food to minimize waste.</li>
<li>Use a map and compass to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns or flagging.</li>
</ul>

Plan Ahead And Prepare

<ul>
<li>Durable surfaces include established trails and campsites, rock, gravel, dry grasses or snow.</li>
<li>Protect riparian areas by camping at least 200 feet from lakes and streams.</li>
<li>Good campsites are found, not made. Altering a site is not necessary.</li>

<li>In popular areas:</li>
<ul>
<li>Concentrate use on existing trails and campsites.</li>
<li>Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy.</li>
<li>Keep campsites small. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent.</li>

<li>In pristine areas:</li>
<ul>
<li>Disperse use to prevent the creation of campsites and trails.</li>
<li>Avoid places where impacts are just beginning.</li>
</ul>

Travel And Camp On Durable Surfaces

<ul>
<li>Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for trash or spilled foods. Pack out all trash, leftover food and litter.</li>
<li>Deposit solid human waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep, at least 200 feet from water, camp and trails. Cover and disguise the cathole when finished.</li>
<li>Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products.</li>
<li>To wash yourself or your dishes, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater.</li>
</ul>

Dispose Of Waste Properly

<li>Preserve the past: examine, but do not touch cultural or historic structures and artifacts.</li>
<li>Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.</li>
<li>Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species.</li>
<li>Do not build structures, furniture, or dig trenches.</li>
</ul>

Leave What You Find

<ul>
<li>Campfires can cause lasting impacts to the environment. Use a lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a candle lantern for light.</li>
<li>Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires.</li>
<li>Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand.</li>
<li>Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely, then scatter cool ashes.</li>
</ul>

Minimize Campfire Impacts

<ul>
<li>Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.</li>
<li>Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators and other dangers.</li>
<li>Protect wildlife and your food by storing rations and trash securely.</li>
<li>Control pets at all times, or leave them at home.</li>
<li>Avoid wildlife during sensitive times: mating, nesting, raising young, or winter.</li>
</ul>

Respect Wildlife

<ul>
<li>Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.</li>
<li>Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail.</li>
<li>Step to the downhill side of the trail when encountering pack stock.</li>
<li>Take breaks and camp away from trails and other visitors.</li>
<li>Let nature's sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises.</li>
