About

My friend and I are organizing a camping trip next weekend on the February 26/27. This will be a very unique hike offering an experience most have never had. We'll be backpacking the Canyonlands of Big Thicket National Preserve: https://www.nps.gov/bith/planyourvisit/canyonlands-unit.htm The Canyonlands has no established trails, and so we'll mostly be navigating off-trail through backcountry. This is your opportunity to learn how to use maps and a compass! We'll hike for ~6 hours / ~4 miles between two days. Expect to climb logs, cross streams, climb up small cliffs, walk through muddy areas and sandy beaches, etc. We'll camp literally in the middle of no where. The trip is intended for intermediate backpackers, but it'll be beginner friendly so everyone is welcome. We'll take it slow and casual to have fun, enjoy the scenery, and to explore the uncharted wildnerness. You'll need a backpack, food, water, etc. It's off trail so brush/thorn resistant clothing and good h iking shoes/boots is strongly encouraged. A machete is nice but not needed. Temperatures are expected to be in the 40's and 50's, so ideally bring a winter tent and winter sleeping bag. We'll be cooking over a warm fire! If you are a beginner, it's important you spend time watching youtube tutorials and get help with choosing your gear. Keep your backpack as light as possible! Meet us at the Visitors Center at 9:30am Saturday to get a free permit: 6102 FM 420, Kountze, TX 77625 We will then carpool together to the trailhead at coordinates: 30.72316, -94.14766
