If you're lucky enough to get one of the first sites, it's the best free camping with views of Estes Park in the area. The road was rough getting in, requiring high clearance, and bigger rigs and trailers would struggle with the deep ruts and sharp turns up hills. We had great verizon LTE coverage and decent AT&T as well. This area appears to be popular with dirt and mountain biking. Further up the road is access to hiking trails. There are no toilets or trash collection, so please practice Leave No Trace and pack out everything you bring in!
The road is rough once you turn onto the forest road past all the houses. We made it in our Sprinter, no 4x4, but it was a little cringey. You at least need a higher clearance vehicle and I don’t recommend trailers or longer vehicles because of tight turns in the road in addition to the bumps and dips. We didn’t want to deal with the road past the first larger pull off with multiple spots, but the views of Estes Park and RMNP were amazing there. We had good Verizon coverage at that spot, but it gets weaker if you go further up the road.
I’m sure it would of been a nice place if the road wasn’t washed out so much. Lots of areas to bottom out on. Tried going up with a 136wb Ram Promaster 1500 high roof and it was not going to work. You could make it with a Jeep or some other smaller off-roading, high ground clearance vehicle. Hope the road will get redone soon and it will be better in the future. Do not come with a bus or long vehicle. Lots of tight switchbacks to drive going up the last 2 miles.
Overlanders dream site. Short yet rough ride up. Choose your route right and have some clearance or you could dent an oil pan. Get your spot early cause they’re obviously quite desirable. Had arguably one of the nicest spots on the road with an incredible view, had a late arrival tuck in right at the entrance to our site, they weren’t a bother. It’s have 5 stars if it weren’t for folks leaving their bowel movements a little too close to the site.
