About

The Morrison-Clark Inn, built in 1864 and a member of Historic Hotels of America® since 1989 was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation® for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. The Morrison-Clark Historic Inn had its beginnings in early townhome living with two wealthy businessmen, David Morrison and Reuben Clark, who, in 1864, owned neighboring elegant townhouses in Washington, DC's posh Massachusetts Avenue area. A later owner of Clark's house, who was inspired by the architecture of the Orient, added a Chinese Chippendale porch and a Shanghai roof. In 1923, the two structures were combined into one mansion, which housed the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen's Club; it lodged 120 servicemen at 75 cents per person, per night. It was restored and reopened in 1987 to feature original details such as marble fireplaces, four 12-foot tall mahogany pier mirrors, and two wrought-iron ceiling medallions.
