The St. James Hotel MN, built in 1875 and a member of Historic Hotels of America® since 2000 was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. One of America's longest running hotels, the St. James was built along the banks of the Mississippi River in 1875 in Red Wing, Minnesota, the era's largest wheat-trade market. Civic-minded businessmen of the time recognized the need for a world-class hotel and commissioned the design of this distinctive five-story Italianate structure. The first guests marveled at the hotel's modern features, including steam heat, hot and cold running water, and a state-of-the-art kitchen.
