After about 7-8 miles of mostly dirt roads you get to a point where there is paved road again. The road soon ends at a gate where the observatory is. Right before the gate there is a big bend in the road and a pull off there where you can park 1-2 vans. I stayed a afternoon, over night, and most of the next day here. There is a rocky path to explore and also a less maked path going up the hill that you can get beautiful views of the valley below all around. (Photo showing path) T-Mobile service is in and out but had enough to stream Netflix and send emails. A lott color up here then the valley below.

i work at the observatory beyond the gate and can confirm this is a wide, level site that’s under USFS jurisdiction and free to camp. please don’t walk past the gate. during the week there’s quite a bit of traffic going up in the morning and down in the afternoon, but usually quiet on weekends. great views to the east and west.
