Scaredman Recreation Site

This semi-remote campground on Canton Creek is off the beaten path . The nine campsite recreation area has a water system and vault toilets. A number of waterplay areas are located close to Scaredman on Canton Creek. The site is popular during the fall hunting season. Even though fishing is closed on Canton Creek and all Steamboat drainages, the North Umpqua River, 3.5 miles downstream, offers fishing opportunities for fly-fishermen looking for steelhead or salmon. Check the Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations before you go. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: * Camping is on a first-come, first serve basis; no reservations are accepted. * The campground is open seasonally from June through October. * Firewood is available for $6 per bundle. * Don't Move Firewood: Please protect Pacific Northwest forests by preventing the spread of invasive species. Firewood can carry insects and diseases that can threaten the health of our western forests. You can make a difference by obtaining and burning your firewood near your camping destination. POINT OF INTEREST: Scaredman was named by early hunters who camped in the area and were frightened by the abundance of wolves in the area at the time.
