There are several sites along this first road. When you first turn off you are still in NP land, but once you cross into kaibab NF you can camp. Lots of spots. Great spot, road is a little washed out but no issues with 2wd low clearance van. 4 bars of service ( Verizon).
The closest you can get to the park without actually camping in it.
Road was closed due to construction and the back way in was gated off. My guess is the park is shutting down the access to the national forest area.

Lots of sites once you cross into the National Forest. There’s a pit toilet at the Arizona trailhead if you keep driving for a bit. Great cell service. Fire rings scattered around.
