Halfway between Tucson and Phoenix, I-10 Exit 211, roomy pull-thru's. See unusual cactus before a dunk in the pool. If you're daring, scramble straight up 1,500-ft-tall ancient lava peak “Picacho” – or saunter up leisurely along Sunset trail. SE on frontage road 7 miles. A little further down frontage road, hand-feed ostriches, lorikeets and sting rays at the Ostrich Ranch. Behold the 4-story remnants of “Big House” (Casa Grande) built by the prehistoric Desert People using 3,000 tons of “caliche” (mud). N on AZ-87 17 miles.
